About the museum
The museum, which holds the finds of ancient Tortona, is housed in the Palazzo Guidobono in the historic centre of the town. It was presented to the public on 14 July 2023, and the reopening was described as the start of a new phase for the civic collection.
The route tells the story of Roman Dertona, which reached its greatest development between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, with sewers, an aqueduct, houses, baths, temples and a public library.
Among the pieces on display are the sarcophagus of Publio Elio Sabino, the tombstone of the Tortona soldier Aurelio Veterano, the funerary stele of the gens Latinia, a headless togate statue, two polychrome mosaics, entablature fragments with metopes and triglyphs, capitals, marble fragments, household objects and three fistulae aquariae, the lead pipes of the town’s aqueduct.
