About the museum
The gallery is housed in the medieval small palace that houses the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Tortona, overlooking Piazza Duomo, and has been open to the public since 2001. It is a permanent display devoted to Divisionism, the painting technique that places pure colours side by side on the canvas to achieve maximum luminosity. The movement had one of its centres in the Milan area and in Piedmont, particularly in the province of Alessandria, from its earliest experiments.
The collection brings together about 145 works by more than fifty artists. At its heart is Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, of whom the gallery holds the largest group of paintings in a public collection; alongside him appear Segantini, Morbelli, Previati, Boccioni and Balla, together with lesser-known authors. The rooms follow the themes and the exhibition and collecting history of the movement, from the influence of the Milanese Scapigliatura to landscape, from social-protest painting to spirituality, and on to the legacy taken up by the Futurist avant-garde.
The Foundation works with the Musei di Pellizza di Volpedo and also offers a library and an archive devoted to Divisionism.
