About the museum
The Museo comunale della Mail Art in Montecarotto was established in 1984 thanks to donations from some of the leading masters of Italian art, and opened the following year. It is the only public museum in Italy dedicated to mail art, the art of correspondence, in which envelopes, stamps, postcards and parcels become the support and material of the work. A decisive boost came from the artist Ernesto Treccani, who during a visit left some watercolours and produced a print to send to artists all over the world.
After years of closure for lack of suitable premises, the museum was reopened in 2006 and moved into the restored rooms of the former prop workshop of the municipal theatre, with barrel vaults, exposed stone and arcades.
The modern art collection includes prints by Marche artists such as Orfeo Tamburi, Pericle Fazzini and Arnoldo Ciarrocchi, as well as works by Sepo, Zauli, Zavattini, Borgonzoni and numerous foreign artists. The mail art archive grew out of initiatives promoted by the museum, such as “Dossier Pace”, “Con musica”, “Ex Vinis” and “Dedicato a Monna Lisa”, which involved hundreds of international artists. The museum belongs to the museum system of the Province of Ancona.
