About the museum
The museum, opened in December 2002, is devoted to the life of the enclosed monastery of Santa Maria Maddalena, which stands a short distance from the centre of Serra de’ Conti and has housed a monastic community since 1586. It collects objects linked to the everyday life and work of the nuns, from the 16th to the late 19th century.
The route is based on research in the archives of the monastery and of the episcopal archive of Senigallia, and was curated by the art historian Amelia Mariotti. The rooms recreate settings such as the pharmacy (spezieria), the kitchen and the “lavoriero” (workroom), where activities such as spinning, embroidery, dyeing of fabrics, wax modelling and the making of silk flowers took place.
The visit is designed as a theatrical route with audio guides and narrating voices through nine stations, supported by multimedia displays, a video on the life of the nuns today and a section devoted to the enclosure (clausura). The museum also offers educational workshops, an escape room and a soundwalk through the streets of the town.
