About the museum
The museum is dedicated to the composer Gaspare Spontini (1774–1851) and was opened in 1951, on the centenary of his death, in the building that the musician and his wife had chosen as their residence on returning to Maiolati. The couple bought an old farmhouse in 1842, which was transformed between 1843 and 1846 in neoclassical forms by the Jesi architect Ciriaco Santini. Spontini lived there only briefly, from September 1850, and died there on 24 January 1851.
Over the decades the house served various purposes: municipal offices, a school, a pharmacy, public housing and a warehouse. In 1951 a presidential decree declared it a national monument.
The route unfolds over three floors in twelve rooms that trace the Italian, French and Prussian periods, his last years and domestic life, with study, bedroom, wardrobe and sitting rooms. Scores and manuscripts, two Erard fortepianos of 1820, the diploma of the Legion of Honour, clothing and paintings of the early 19th century are on display. The archive and the library occupy the ground floor.
