About the museum

The museum was established in 2015 through an agreement between the Comune di Chiusdino, owner of the building and managing body, and the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino, representing the parishes from which most of the works come. It was inaugurated on 20 December 2015 with a contribution from Monte dei Paschi di Siena.

The seat is the Palazzo Taddei, in the historic centre of Chiusdino next to the town hall, the residence of the Taddei family from the late 17th to the late 20th century; the renovation is by the architect Paolo Zermani. The museum is named after Saint Galgano, a knight and hermit born in Chiusdino in the 12th century, because most of the works on display relate to him.

The collections include bas-reliefs, paintings on panel and canvas, sacred goldsmiths' work, reliquaries and votive offerings from the parish churches and chapels of the area, including a bas-relief by Giovanni di Agostino, a relief by Urbano da Cortona dated 1446, the panel by Niccolò di Segna dated 1336 from the hermitage of Montesiepi, and the liturgical furnishings of Cardinal Giuseppe Maria Feroni.
