About the museum
The Centro Studi e Documentazione per le Tradizioni Popolari was established by the Comune di Cocullo on the occasion of the 1997 rite, a few months after the death of the anthropologist Alfonso Maria Di Nola, who had long studied the village's festival and had been made an honorary citizen. Scholars coordinated by professors Emiliano Giancristofaro and Ireneo Bellotta took part in the project.
The Centre is in the town hall (palazzo comunale) on the central square of the village and includes a multimedia exhibition on the Serpari rite and the feast of San Domenico Abate; a library of cultural anthropology with the work of Di Nola and the scholars linked to him; the proceedings of the annual conferences; a periodicals library with articles from the European and world press; television documentaries on the rite; an animated exhibition on the main snake species of the area; an archive of popular traditions and an archive of historical documents.
The cataloguing and updating of the holdings are carried out by the Associazione culturale “Alfonso M. di Nola”, founded in Cocullo in 2009. The Centre also runs training and outreach activities for school groups and visitors.
