About the museum
The Museo dell’Alto Tavoliere (MAT) is the civic museum of San Severo. It was founded in 1989 in the rooms of the former convent of San Francesco d’Assisi, a complex of ancient origin (first mentioned in 1232), rebuilt after the earthquake of 1627 and extended in the direction of the old line of the walls. After the suppression of the Franciscan order the building had various uses, including barracks and orphanage, and since 1989 it has also housed the municipal library and historical archive. The current display was inaugurated on 4 April 2009.
The route takes visitors into the past of the area through the finds from archaeological sites from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages. Two introductory sections tell the history of the territory as a history of landscapes, through travellers' diaries and the aerial photographs that enabled the discovery of archaeological sites.
The prehistoric collection combines original finds with reconstructions and copies. The museum holds one of the most important collections of Daunian tomb goods, from the necropolises of Serpente, Pedincone and Casone (to which an entire room is dedicated) and from the urban centre, with stelae, tomb markers and prestige objects. A thematic room is dedicated to Apulian red-figure pottery and to polychrome tempera pottery; the Lapidarium on the lower floor houses finds from the Roman period.
