Museum in the Palazzo Bentivoglio in Gualtieri dedicated to the painter Antonio Ligabue, with the Tirelli Trappetti Collection and the frescoed Salone dei Giganti.
Limited operations (expected until 2026-11-20). The Sala Giove, dedicated to Ligabue, is closed to the public for redisplay from 12 October to 20 November 2026; the Tirelli Trappetti Collection, the Sala Eneide and the Salone dei Giganti remain open.
The exhibition at Palazzo Bentivoglio is devoted to Antonio Ligabue, Cesare Zavattini and the Bassa. Zavattini's poem about the painter provides the thread and accompanies visitors as a narrating voice.
About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo Bentivoglio in Gualtieri and is dedicated to Antonio Ligabue (1899–1965), a painter and sculptor associated with the Bassa Reggiana. As early as 1988 the municipality had set up the Centro studi e documentazione Antonio Ligabue in the Sala Giove of the palace. In 2014 the Fondazione Museo Antonio Ligabue was established, promoted by the municipality of Gualtieri together with local institutions and businesses; since 2015 it has worked with the municipality to create a permanent museum. Since 2016 its activities have also included temporary exhibitions and the enhancement of the palace’s heritage.
The Sala Giove displays works by Ligabue, with paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures accompanied by documentary material. The Sala Eneide presents a biography of the artist with previously unpublished photographs. The Umberto Tirelli Trappetti Collection, donated to the municipality, commemorates Umberto Tirelli, a tailor from Gualtieri, and includes two costumes and 53 works, among them pieces by Balthus, Guttuso, Clerici, De Chirico and Manzù.
The Salone dei Giganti holds fresco cycles inspired by the Gerusalemme liberata (Jerusalem Delivered), among the most important elements of the palace’s monumental heritage.
