About the museum

The Museo del Treno was founded in 2009 on the initiative of the Associazione Culturale Amatori Ferrovie (ACAF), set up in 2002 to protect and promote Italian railway culture, in particular the Abruzzo railway experience of the 20th century. It was the first railway preservation site in the city and the third on the Adriatic coast, after Trieste Campo Marzio and Lecce. The Comune di Montesilvano supports the initiative logistically, and the Regione, the Provincia and the Fondazione Pescarabruzzo collaborate.

The museum is located at Montesilvano railway station and houses, restored, two locomotives (a steam locomotive of 1924, the 940.052, and a diesel of 1964) and eight towed vehicles from different periods. Inside the vehicles, visitors can see memorabilia, finds and records of railway operation, traction, maintenance and signalling in earlier times.

One of the wagons, the FS “F1925”, is used as a video room and media library for visitor groups and school parties. The association also looks after railway modelling, with layouts and dioramas.
