About the museum
The museum is dedicated to the composer Amilcare Ponchielli, born in Paderno in 1834 and best known for the opera “La Gioconda” and the piece “La danza delle ore” (“The Dance of the Hours”). It is set up in his birthplace, in the village that now bears his name.
The route follows the life and works of the composer in chronological order. On display are some original furnishings and instruments, autograph manuscripts, photographs, medals and opera librettos from early and later performances, with dates and performers, together with vocal and piano scores of well-known and lesser-known works. One section is devoted to the composer’s posthumous fame, with documents and works linked to celebrations and to the spread of his music.
The museum also includes a sound archive with recordings on discs, CDs, audio and video tapes and live recordings, a library, and a press archive with biographies and articles on Ponchielli and his works from the 19th century onwards. In 2020 and 2022 the birthplace was listed in the FAI census “I Luoghi del Cuore” (“Places of the Heart”).
