About the museum
The Museo Civico Selinuntino in Castelvetrano houses numerous archaeological finds of considerable historical and artistic value discovered in the Selinunte area. Its most famous piece is the Ephebe, a rare bronze casting 85 cm tall depicting a young nude figure, recently identified as Dionysus (480–460 BC). Other highlights include the “lex sacra”, a lead sheet inscribed with a 5th-century BC text on the rules of expiation for anyone who had committed parricide, an Attic column krater of 470 BC and a Byzantine steelyard. Numerous coins and Greek pottery from various origins are also on display.
The visit is completed in the nearby former church of the Agostiniani with the permanent exhibition “Selinunte immaginata”, which brings together reproductions of how travellers and archaeologists between the 18th and 20th centuries depicted the ancient Greek colony, first in idealised forms and then in increasingly scientific ones. Here there are also three ship's rams (rostra) recovered by the heritage authority (Soprintendenza del mare) from the seabed around the Egadi Islands, dating to the end of the First Punic War (241 BC), and twenty Egadi amphorae of the 2nd–4th century AD.
