About the museum
The civic museum in Mattinata holds the archaeological collection of Matteo Sansone, a pharmacist who assembled one of the most important private collections in Puglia over the 19th and 20th centuries and bequeathed it to the State. The museum makes this heritage available to the public.
The display presents over 2,500 finds of great artistic, historical and archaeological interest, which relate to the culture of the Daunians in a chronological route from the protohistoric to the Roman period. It is arranged in six sections and a visible storeroom that recalls, in its design, the pharmacy that housed the collection for a long time.
The materials include Daunian stelae, coins, metal objects such as weapons and ornaments, and ceramic finds, including painted vases mostly from the province of Foggia, in particular from the Gargano and the Tavoliere.
