About the museum
The Musei Tecum are part of the complex of the sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo in Monte Sant’Angelo, on the Gargano. The basilica was built at the end of the 6th century and rebuilt in 871. The museum that documents its history opened in 1989 and is organised into two thematic collections, the devotional museum and the lapidary museum, to which the Lombard crypts are added.
The crypts, a gallery about 60 metres long beneath the floor of the Grotta and of the access corridor, were brought to light between 1949 and 1955 thanks to excavations promoted by the archdeacon Nicola Quitadamo. They preserve almost two hundred inscriptions incised between the 6th and 9th centuries, including inscriptions in runic script. In the Lombard gallery is the lapidary museum, with more than two hundred sculptural works from the sanctuary and from other monuments in the town, rearranged in 2015. Its main pieces include a statue of Saint Michael from the 14th–15th centuries and an ambo attributed to Acceptus, dated 1041.
The devotional museum, rearranged in 2008, holds the basilica’s possessions: vestments, silverware, ex voto offerings, icons, textiles, statues of the Archangel and a collection of gold votive offerings, as well as collections of coins, archaeology and ceramics. The treasury, part of the devotional museum, includes a rock-crystal cross reliquary, copes and chasubles donated by the kings of Savoy, and the chalice and paten donated by John Paul II.
