About the museum
The museum is housed in the castle of Manfredonia, a Swabian-Angevin-Aragonese complex that visitors can also explore as an architectural structure. Since December 2014 it has been run by the Ministry of Culture through the Polo museale della Puglia, which in December 2019 became the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Puglia.
The best-known core of the collection consists of the Daunian stelae, limestone funerary monuments of Daunian culture dating from roughly the late 8th to the early 5th century BC. Alongside them are displayed materials from the excavations of the archaeological park of Siponto, the ancient port of the area, and transport amphorae recovered from the sea, which document trade along Adriatic routes in the Daunian and Roman periods.
Architectural and epigraphic materials, largely from the Siponto area, complete the route. In 2017 the museum recorded more than 68,000 visitors.
