About the museum
The natural history museum is at Villaggio Umbra, in the heart of the Foresta Umbra, in the territory of Monte Sant’Angelo, within the Gargano National Park. Besides presenting its collections, it serves as a visitor centre and a point of reference for those who want to walk the forest trails.
The indoor section has three parts. The first concerns the flora of the Gargano, with illuminated panels on the most valuable tree species and a large relief model of the promontory. The second is devoted to archaeology, with stone artefacts from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic and reconstructions of flint axes, picks and scrapers. The third presents the fauna, with about two hundred stuffed mammals and birds that live in the park’s wetlands or stop there during migration.
The outdoor section tells the story of the Gargano’s woodcutters and charcoal burners along an educational trail with a woodcutter’s house, a charcoal kiln, tools and implements. Elements of the Decauville railway, which carried tree trunks through the forest until the early 20th century, can also be seen.
