About the museum
The Museo Etnografico Tancredi was founded in 1925 at the wish of Giovanni Tancredi, a scholar and researcher of local traditions. It is presented as the first and most important ethnographic institute in Apulia dedicated to the heritage of the Gargano. It is housed in the former Franciscan convent of Monte Sant’Angelo, in Piazza San Francesco, and in 1930 it took part in the Bolzano exhibition, winning awards and attracting the attention of scholars and the public.
The collections include artefacts, tools and everyday objects that document crafts and trades, customs, costumes and rural work. The historic photo archive holds period images of the social and cultural life of the area. Today the museum functions as an archive of Gargano culture and a research centre, with educational services, a sound workshop, a dialect dictionary and podcasts.
The display is spread over two floors. On the ground floor are the sections on superstitions, the Guacci collection of papier-mâché statues of the Passion of Christ, the Almanacco perpetuo (perpetual almanac) and the agricultural and pastoral economy. On the first floor are popular devotion and the pilgrimage to the sanctuary of San Michele, the cycle of life, the inn, crafts and the sculptors of the San Michele figurines.
