About the museum

The Municipal Museum of the Cassero is housed in the Rocca del Cassero in Monte San Savino, a fortress built by the Sienese between 1382 and 1384 with four corner towers, a central keep, a moat and a drawbridge. Because of its similarities with the fortress of Lucignano, the design is attributed to the architect Bartolo di Bartolo.

The museum was set up in 1989 on the initiative of the Municipality, with the aim of promoting the ceramic tradition of the village. Since 1 July 2025 it has been open to visitors again, with a renewed route and display.

The ceramics section includes earthenware for domestic and agricultural use, late medieval ceramics (also from finds that emerged during the restoration work on the fortress in the 1980s) and products of local workshops that are still active. Two rooms house paintings of the Venerable Confraternity of the Misericordia and sculptures from various periods, including a 16th-century Marzocco in pietra serena that was previously in the Palazzo Pretorio. The visit is completed by an Etruscan-Roman section with finds from the Valdichiana and liturgical objects from the 16th to 18th centuries from the church of Sant’Agostino.
