About the museum
The Museo comunale di Lucignano occupies the ground floor of the 13th-century Palazzo Comunale, formerly the Palazzo Pretorio, once the seat of the courts and their prisons. It was opened in 1924 to gather and display the town's most precious works of art, and was rearranged in its present location in the 1980s. The upper floors house the municipal offices and the council chamber, frescoed by Luigi Ademollo in 1812.
The museum's symbol is the Albero d’Oro, also called the Tree of Life: a plant-shaped reliquary about 2.60 metres tall, begun in 1350 and completed in 1471 by the Sienese goldsmith Gabriello d’Antonio, from the church of San Francesco. It carried Franciscan relics and fragments of the Cross on twelve branches; it was stolen in 1914 and found again in 1917 in a cave near Sarteano. A local tradition linked to lovers has grown up around the work.
The collection includes panel paintings and wooden sculptures from the 13th to the 18th century, with a 13th-century Crucifixion, works by Niccolò and Francesco di Segna, Bartolo di Fredi, Lippo Vanni, Luca Signorelli and Giacomo Pacchiarotti, as well as town statutes and municipal seals. The Sala delle Udienze is also part of the route.
