Contemporary art museum in the medieval village of Luzzana, with over 220 works donated by Alberto Meli and Ester Gaini Meli and works by Dada artists.
Solo exhibition of around twenty paintings by Luigimaurizio Assolari in mixed media, combining organic and mechanical elements such as gears and electronic circuits. At its centre is the relationship between nature and technology.
About the museum
The museum arose from the donation to the municipality of Luzzana of more than 220 works by the sculptor Alberto Meli and the painter Ester Gaini Meli. Its opening concludes a project begun in 1989, when the municipality bought the castle of medieval origin, which is an integral part of the village the museum aims to showcase. Scientific coordination was entrusted to Fernando Noris; the layout is by Carlo Pinessi with the architects Alberto Trussardi and Luciano Doneda.
Alberto Meli’s sculptures form the core of the collection and engage in dialogue with the work of Hans Arp, his teacher and a figure of Dada. Alongside Meli are works by other artists associated with Dada, such as Hans Richter, Jacob Probst and Italo Valenti, as well as by contemporary artists. One room is dedicated to Giosuè Meli, a 19th-century sculptor from Luzzana and the author of the rock sculpture “Il Gigante” (1840), which stands in the surrounding area. Among the recent works is “L’albero della Vita”, a series of crucifixes by Alberto Meli that was acquired and restored.
The museum is conceived as a “museo diffuso” (dispersed museum): Meli’s works are also placed in the streets, under the porticoes and in the parish church of the medieval village.
