About the museum
The well temple is in the historic centre of Perfugas, in front of the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, in Anglona. It takes its name from Domenico Canopoli, owner of the garden in which the building was discovered in 1924. It is dated to around 1000 BC and was a place of worship of the Nuragic populations, linked to water.
The structure follows the typical scheme of sacred wells: a paved rectangular vestibule, with seats built along the walls, leads to a flight of eight steps descending into the well chamber, which has a circular plan and a false-dome roof. It is built with perfectly worked limestone blocks arranged in regular courses; the blocks were quarried from the outcrops of Laerru.
The well is considered one of the most important Nuragic places of worship on the island, together with the sanctuaries of Santa Cristina at Paulilatino and Santa Vittoria at Serri. It is part of the urban itinerary of Perfugas, which links the Museo archeologico e paleobotanico (MAP), the sacred well and the retablo of San Giorgio. The itinerary is run by the cooperative Sa Rundine.
