About the museum
The museum is housed in the former Capuchin convent of Calangianus, a town in Gallura known as the capital of cork. Industrial cork processing officially began in 1851 and quickly employed hundreds of people, including from neighbouring villages. Cork stoppers were presented at the international exhibition in Milan in 1906, and the first cork fair was held in 1978.
The guided tour follows the stages of production: harvesting and stripping of the bark, processing and finished products, including stoppers, footwear, bags, insulating panels and accessories. Films and photographs explain how the first machines worked, while work benches, lathes and a nativity scene made entirely of cork are displayed along the route.
The collection includes old and modern machines from the late nineteenth century, video installations and scents, and gives space to local craftspeople. On leaving, visitors receive a small cork souvenir.
