About the museum
The Museo del Biroccio marchigiano was founded in 1967 by Glauco Luchetti Gentiloni on the ground floor of the historic Palazzo Beltrami-Luchetti in Filottrano. The aim was to gather enough examples to show the characteristics of the Marche farm cart and the structural and painted differences between one area and another.
Since Etruscan times, a sturdy two-wheeled cart pulled by oxen, with a rectangular body resting on the shaft, had been in use in central Italy. The cart, found in Tuscany, Umbria, the Marche and Abruzzo, kept the same structure over the centuries; only in the Marche, however, is it decorated with a dense painting of flowers, fanciful motifs, figures and landscapes in red, blue, yellow and green. The builders, known as birocciai, carradori or facocchi, passed the trade down from father to son.
For each area, roughly corresponding to today's provinces, one example is presented, with a description of the technical solutions adopted, especially for securing the load. Variations in the painting can be seen in the numerous panels dated from 1951 to 1988, taken down and hung on the walls; photographs, drawings, furnishings and tools complete the picture of Marche rural culture. The reference study is the volume “Il biroccio marchigiano” by Glauco Luchetti Gentiloni, published in 1967.
