About the museum
Foof was created in Mondragone, in the province of Caserta, from a project to redevelop a shelter for abandoned dogs. The idea was to go beyond the traditional dog shelter and create a green space in which to celebrate and protect the dog.
The complex covers about 20,000 m² and presents itself as the first park museum entirely dedicated to the dog. One part of the route displays ancient finds that tell the story of the dog's evolution and of its relationship with humans, while another part is dedicated to living dogs: the breeding area features 20 breeds recognised by the ENCI, from various parts of the world, and in the shelter dogs wait for a new family.
The themed routes illustrate the collaboration between people and dogs, both in its emotional and its working aspects. The museum runs educational activities for schools, has been recognised as an innovative museum by the Associazione Nazionale Musei Locali e Istituzionali (ANMLI) and collaborates with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Federico II University of Naples.
