About the museum
Anton Giulio Barrili, a writer and Garibaldian politician, had the villa built in Carcare in 1885, naming it Maura after his mother. After his death his nieces Maura and Laura inherited the building and protected it during the German occupation; the municipality bought and restored it in 1967, followed by a later project supported by the Regione Liguria.
Since 1981 the ground floor has housed the civic library; the first floor, which was the Barrili family’s apartment, holds the museum in four rooms, with the reconstructed study, the writer’s archive and his personal library. According to a sector portal, the collection comprises about 9,860 books, his collection of newspapers and magazines, about 20,000 letters of correspondence with the leading figures of late-19th-century culture, and about 3,500 memorabilia and everyday objects. Rare editions, sixteenth-century books, foreign-language books, prints, pamphlets, sheet music and the manuscripts of the lectures Barrili gave at the Università di Genova are also noted.
