About the museum
The castle stands in Saliceto, along the Via del Sole that links Piedmont with Liguria. It belonged to the Del Carretto marquises of Bagnasco and the Damiani of Priocca, and passed to the Savoys in 1532. In 1639 Madama Reale granted it to Captain Buttino da Ceva, who defended it against an attack by the Spanish.
Seriously damaged in the course of the conflicts, it was later rebuilt. Today it is open to the public again and is reached by a masonry ramp that leads to the imposing entrance portal.
The guided tour includes a hidden passage in the south tower, the remains of a chapel in the loggia, and the frescoes of the Sala delle armi, among them a cycle with the Agnus Dei dating from the late 14th century, recently discovered.
