About the museum
The civic museum of the terracotta whistle was set up in 2004 by the municipal administration of Rutigliano and bears the name of Domenico Divella, a local entrepreneur who for decades led the pasta company of the same name. Since 1989 the Divella company has supported the festival of Sant’Antonio Abate and the national competition for terracotta whistles “Città di Rutigliano”, held every year around 17 January. The tradition of the Rutigliano whistles received the De.Co. (Denominazione comunale di origine, municipal designation of origin) recognition in 2003.
The collection arises directly from the works presented at the competition and now numbers more than 700 pieces, catalogued and photographed. It includes works by potters from Rutigliano, by craftsmen and artists from Apulia and elsewhere in Italy, as well as creations by school pupils and local associations, and bears witness to the variety of figures, symbols and sources of inspiration linked to this popular production.
The museum is on the first floor of Palazzo San Domenico, a former Dominican convent built at the end of the 16th century on the initiative of the Spanish captain Francesco Giovanni Scivara. After Italian unification the convent was suppressed and the complex passed to the Comune, which used it as a school, a district prison and as the seat of municipal and judicial offices. The same building also houses the civic library, with about 700 volumes on whistles and the history of ceramics, and the community library BiBaRà.
