About the museum
The Museo del giocattolo in Catania was set up in January 2002 by the cultural association IOCO and was housed for years in Palazzo Bruca. Since January 2011 it has been in a more functional site at Le Ciminiere, the cultural centre on Viale Africa, thanks to the hospitality of the Provincia Regionale.
The collections are arranged by material and origin and show how people entertained themselves with few means in the past. They include string and mechanical toys, the magic lantern and miniature carousels, alongside school exercise books and vintage children's magazines, including “Corriere dei Piccoli”. The oldest piece is a Victorian dolls' house with six rooms furnished in miniature and finished with lace.
