About the museum

The Museo del Lavoro in San Potito Ultra arose from the De Felice – Sbriziolo donation: a collection of antique tools and work implements, transferred from the Province of Avellino to the Municipality by the architect Eirene Sbriziolo with the aim of creating the first museum of work in Irpinia. It opened in 2006 and has grown thanks to further donations from private individuals and purchases by the municipal administration.

It is located in the cellars of the eighteenth-century Palazzo dei baroni Amatucci, today the seat of the Municipality, where the family archive is also kept. It displays more than a thousand objects, dating from the eighteenth to the twentieth century and coming mainly from the local area and southern Italy: tools of technical and liberal professions, household objects, clothing, music and craft workshops. These include miniature reconstructions of trades such as the stonemason, the typographer, the carpenter, the barber and the blacksmith, scenes of material life, and life-size shop windows of old shops.

The museum is linked to the Vecchia Ramiera, a nineteenth-century iron and copper foundry in the nearby locality of the same name, which hosts food, wine and music events in summer. The museum is recognised as being of regional interest, is part of the Sistema Irpinia and offers educational workshops for children.
