About the museum
The Museo Etnografico della Piana del Dragone was founded in 1999 on the initiative of Antonio Marra, in collaboration with the association “Il Tiglio Onlus”, with the aim of saving objects of historical and artistic interest and handing down the peasant traditions of Volturara Irpina. The collection has grown thanks to donations from residents.
The museum is housed in the municipally owned cultural centre, a former cinema in the historic centre. It holds around 2,500 objects spread over two levels and divided into sectors: domestic activities, farming, crafts and educational activities. Large items are also displayed in the entrance hall, such as the old two-wheeled cart of the 20th century known as “traino”.
Among the most striking features is the reconstruction of some domestic rooms, such as the bedroom with a mattress filled with maize leaves. The route tells the story of rural life from the late 19th century to 1960, with tools, furniture, sideboards, religious occasions and the family and social organisation of the Volturara community.
