About the museum
The firm Luigi Magugliani was founded in 1867, with its first workshops near the present Piazza del Popolo in Corbetta, where carts, roofs, barrels and carriages were produced. In 1884 the company moved to the Ca' Grande in Via Volta and, in the 20th century, it also established itself in furniture production, supplying furnishings for the RAI headquarters in Milan. Activity in Corbetta ceased in 1997.
The founder's grandson, Luigi Magugliani, donated the building and some historic machinery to the municipality to create a museum dedicated to woodworking. The association “Luigi Magugliani – Museo del Legno” was set up in 2004, and the “pre-museum” was inaugurated on 4 June 2005, as part of the Curia Picta project, the museum system of the Naviglio Grande.
The museum was laid out in three sections: a 19th-century Cornish fire-tube boiler, a section on wood with beams of various species, and a sawmill with a historic Venetian log saw. Closed to the public in 2012 because of structural problems in the rooms, it can now be visited by appointment in the two sections with the boiler and the log saw. The municipality has obtained PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) funding for the securing of some parts.
