About the museum
The museum’s origins date back to the early 1980s, when a group of friends had the idea of collecting evidence of the local past: tools and work implements to hand down as concrete proof of the daily toil of earlier generations. The project took shape in 1983, when the mayor invited residents to contribute farm tools, implements and materials linked to the crafts and trades of Cuggiono and neighbouring villages. Some rooms in Villa Annoni, which had become municipal property, provided the first premises.
The museum occupies the right-hand side wing of the neoclassical villa, built in 1809 to a design by the architect Zanoja, in the rooms once used by the household staff. Today it extends over two floors with 15 display rooms, accessed from the cloister. Alongside the section on work tools, documents and objects on the wars, on emigration, on the activities of local associations and on the first forms of welfare and social assistance have been added over time.
The museum is run by the association Amici del Museo, which researches and restores old objects and tools belonging to the local community and identifies their function. The association has also published an illustrated guide and a collection of proverbs and sayings in the Cuggionese dialect. The website also offers a virtual tour and a section on emigrants from Cuggiono to America.
