About the museum
The museum, founded by Arduino Martinuzzo and named after him, is housed in the Casa del Minatore, in Via Nazario Sauro in Fratta, a hamlet of Caneva. It collects testimonies on mining work and on emigration to mining basins, particularly in Belgium, but also in Brazil and Italy, and promotes research on this subject.
The collection includes tools and implements of the trade, such as rock drills, helmets, lamps, axes, a section of track with small wagons, ventilation ducts, photographs and samples of extracted material. Particularly significant are the recordings of the voices of former miners and the documentaries on life in the mine and on the Marcinelle tragedy, which preserve the memory of hundreds of workers, many of whom left for Belgium under the Italian–Belgian agreement of 1946 on sending labour in exchange for coal.
