About the museum
The museum has been set up in San Martino di Colle Umberto, the village where Ottavio Bottecchia was born in 1894, in an old mill-forge close to places that were dear to the champion. It is presented as the first museum space in Italy entirely dedicated to him, and the website mentions the collaboration of the Pro Loco di Colle Umberto.
The display cases hold only original items or items that belonged to “Botescià”, as he was known in dialect. Bottecchia, a carter and bricklayer before turning to cycling and awarded the Bronze Medal for Military Valour in the First World War, was the first Italian to win the Tour de France: in 1924 he wore the yellow jersey from the first stage to the last, and he repeated the victory in 1925.
Alongside the collection, the museum organises events in the area, such as cycling-history re-enactments, to rediscover the places linked to the champion and ride the roads he travelled.
