About the museum
The museum documents the scientific work begun in the second half of the 19th century to combat pebrine, the silkworm disease that devastated European silk farming. Louis Pasteur’s method of cellular selection, developed from 1865, led to the creation of institutes producing silkworm seed.
Domenico Marson founded the Istituto Bacologico Marson in 1882, published 37 scientific papers and in 1926 received a French award for his merits in agriculture. After the collapse of silk prices in 1935, many institutes closed.
The Marson factory has remained almost intact in its main building and retains much of its original machinery and instruments. The complex has been declared of particular cultural importance by the Ministry of Culture and is protected by the Soprintendenza (heritage authority).
