About the museum
The Polcenigo museum tells the story of the cooks born in the Alto Livenza, the border area between Friuli and Veneto from which many culinary professionals set out during the twentieth century to work in Italian and foreign restaurants. Polcenigo is regarded as the centre of this tradition, which counts more than three hundred active cooks in Italy and around the world.
The idea was born in 1990 during a conference held in a restaurant in the town, and the museum opened in September 1998 on the occasion of the Sagra dei Sest. Today it is one of the sites of the regional Ecomuseo delle Dolomiti Friulane “Lis Aganis”.
The collection includes documents, letters, period photographs, historical menus, professional tools, diplomas and awards, special recipes and newspaper articles, which reconstruct the working lives of cooks in restaurant kitchens.
