About the museum

The Museo del Monastero delle Orsoline is housed in the former monastery of Calvi dell'Umbria, next to the baroque church of Santa Brigida. The complex was built between 1739 and 1743 to a design by Ferdinando Fuga, who also designed its monumental façade, and was inhabited by the Ursuline nuns until 1994. The museum has been open to the public since 2002, with a new display inaugurated in 2015.

The collection includes more than a hundred paintings and sculptures from the 16th to the 18th century, including the group donated to the Comune by the Chiomenti Vassalli family, with works attributed or related to artists such as Pieter Bruegel the Younger, Guido Reni, Pompeo Batoni, Gaspar van Wittel and Lavinia Fontana, alongside local painters and sculptors, 18th-century furniture and paintings from the churches of the area.

The route also includes the historic rooms of monastic life, such as the kitchens, laundry, pharmacy and woodstore, and the nearby church of Sant'Antonio Abate, which houses a large Nativity scene of thirty polychrome terracotta statues, the work of 1546 by the brothers Giacomo (Giovanni) and Raffaele da Montereale.
