About the museum
Ocriculum was the first Umbrian municipium along the Via Flaminia and a river port on the Tiber. The area was inhabited already in the Iron Age; after the alliance with Rome in 308 BC the settlement moved to the Tiber plain and became a trading centre, favoured by the road and by the river port known as the “Porto dell’Olio”. The city reached its greatest splendour in the imperial age; the Lombard invasions between 569 and 605 destroyed it, and the inhabitants moved to the hill of present-day Otricoli.
The park, covering about 36 hectares, is explored on foot along pedestrian paths. Remains include the forum with the basilica, which housed imperial portrait statues, the Grandi Sostruzioni (Great Substructures), about 80 metres long, the theatre in opus reticulatum, the second-century AD baths with an octagonal hall, a nymphaeum, the amphitheatre and a stretch of the urban Via Flaminia with funerary monuments and a public fountain. A cistern supports the Casale di San Fulgenzio, home of an antiquarium (site museum), and a secondary path leads to the early Christian church of San Vittore, with views over the Tiber.
Along the Via Flaminia, at the locality of Crepafico, there is also an archaic necropolis of the 7th century BC. Every year the park hosts the historical reenactment “Ocriculum 168 d.C.”.
