About the museum
The Museo e Centro Culturale “Marco Scacchi” occupies the first floor of the former convent of Santa Chiara, in the historic centre of Gallese, a 17th-century building of the Poor Clares. It is named after Marco Scacchi, a 17th-century violinist and composer from Gallese, and its guiding theme is music and the soundscape. Besides the museum, the centre hosts exhibitions, publications, conferences, concerts and courses; the municipal historical archive and library are housed in the same complex. The old cloister, covered by a transparent structure, hosts lectures, concerts, shows and film screenings.
The route is organised in five rooms. The first presents the natural environment of the town, on its tufa plateau among gorges, waterfalls and wildlife. The second traces the history, from the Faliscan and Etruscan origins through the Roman age to the Altemps dukes and the Hardouin family, up to the creation in 2011 of the Biodistretto della Via Amerina e delle Forre (bio-district of the Via Amerina and the Forre gorges). The third is devoted to sacred music and religious traditions, with the cult of the patron saint San Famiano, frescoes and Marian works. The fourth is devoted to the 17th-century composers of Gallese, to the historic band “Città di Gallese” and to the mezzo-soprano Armida Parsi Pettinella. The fifth covers work and the economy, from the early 20th-century industrialisation (ceramics, cement, iron) to the role of the railway and the women’s crafts of embroidery and sewing.
