About the museum

The Antiquarium comunale is housed in the 18th-century Palazzo Priorale in the historic centre of Otricoli and opened in 2000. The educational route links the three historical identities of the town: the pre-Roman hilltop settlement, the Roman city of Ocriculum, rebuilt in the valley near the Tiber, and the medieval village that arose again on the hill.

The Roman section, the largest, is based on casts and replicas of finds uncovered in the papal excavations of the 18th century, which were transferred straight to the Vatican Museums, where they still remain. Highlights include the marble head, 58 cm high, of a colossal statue identified as Giove of the local Capitolium, of which the only original cast is preserved here, and the replica of the polychrome mosaic from the baths, discovered in 1780 in the octagonal hall and now in the Sala Rotonda of the Vatican Museums, with scenes of battle between centaurs and Greeks around a large head of Medusa.

Other material includes funerary inscriptions from the mausoleums along the Via Flaminia, a 2nd-century AD table support, a 6th-century altar table that documents the Christianisation of the site, and numerous stone elements reused in the town's buildings. A final section is devoted to the medieval and present-day town. The visit serves as an introduction to the Parco archeologico di Ocriculum.
