About the museum
The museum is located in the monastery of Borgo San Pietro, a hamlet of Petrella Salto, founded by Saint Filippa Mareri in 1228 as a community of women devoted to prayer, work and charity towards the needy. In 1940 the creation of the Salto artificial lake submerged the old settlement: the monastery and the adjoining church were dismantled and rebuilt piece by piece at the present site, about 550 metres above sea level, also using materials from the old monastery.
The collection documents the everyday life of the Poor Clares with furnishings, household objects, recipe books, instruments used in the pharmacy and weaving, and tools for preparing medicines, which the nuns distributed free of charge to the sick through small iron grilles, one of which is on display. Among the works are a 15th-century wooden statue of the saint, in Abruzzese style, the wrought-iron grilles through which the nuns followed religious services, and paintings by Giorgio De Chirico donated by the artist to the monastery.
The complex also includes the adjoining chapel, with 16th-century frescoes and the reliquary that holds the saint's heart.
