About the museum
The Museo del Paesaggio Storico dell’Appennino is housed in the Badia di San Pietro a Moscheta, in the municipality of Firenzuola, an abbey founded in 1034 by Vallombrosan monks. The exhibition is mainly educational and documents the environmental and vegetation changes of the Mugello Apennines.
The first section traces the history of the abbey and the influence of the monks on the organisation of woods and settlements. The second is devoted to the flora, fauna, human settlements and society of the Apennines, with specimens and models that allow visitors to explore the landscape from within. The third presents five scenarios from the periods in which land use changed the most: the landscape of woods and castles, the new lands cultivated and the woods, the invention of the Apennine landscape between the 18th and 19th centuries, that of the villa-farms between the 19th and 20th centuries, and the shift from the uninhabited mountain to the re-inhabited one.
A teaching workshop and walks in the surrounding countryside allow visitors to explore these themes further. The museum organises educational activities and guided tours for groups and schools by appointment.
