About the museum
The museum is dedicated to the tradition of quarrying and working pietra serena (grey sandstone) from Firenzuola and is set beneath the 16th-century walls of the Rocca, designed by Antonio da Sangallo. The route tells the story and daily life of the town: the foundation of Firenzuola as a “walled town” (terra murata), the role of stone in the settlement, the traditional quarrying techniques before machines and pneumatic tools, and the secrets of the master stonemasons.
The thematic spaces range from the new stonemason’s school to quarrying techniques, from the domestic use of stone to the finished product. Coats of arms of the vicars and Florentine magistrates carved in pietra serena can be seen, along with images of quarrymen and stonemasons, hearths, sinks, watering troughs and other everyday objects in stone. The guided visit ends in the volata chamber of the Rocca and on the battlement walkway of the castle.
By order of 18 March 2026 the mayor closed the museum to the public because its structure was found to be unsafe; the Sistema museale del Mugello lists it as closed for renovation works.
