About the museum
The Museo del Parmigiano-Reggiano is part of the circuit of the Musei del Cibo (Food Museums) of the Province of Parma. On 13 June 2026 it moved to the Church of the Capuchins in Fontevivo, a 17th-century building a few steps from the Cistercian abbey. It was precisely the Cistercian monks who, through land reclamation, water management and agricultural organisation, created in the Middle Ages the conditions for the development of the cheese.
The new display presents over 150 historical objects, documents, period images and digital installations. The side chapels of the church structure the sections: the territory, the transport of milk, the cheesemaker’s tools, butter and the copper cauldrons placed in the apse, the promotion of the product with a film from 1948, the collection of graters, maturing, marketing and the role of the Consortium.
A large immersive video projection shows production yesterday and today. Guided tastings, educational workshops and activities for families are planned.
