About the museum
The studio of the academic sculptor Negovan Nemec in Bilje is surrounded by undulating vineyards. Perhaps it was the nature around him that inspired the sculptor to create the living stones of Carrara marble, which he polished to perfection.
The oeuvre that Negovan Nemec left behind is outstanding. In the first cycle of his works the motif of shields appears as a war symbol that protects life; in the following period he devoted himself to organic forms. His artistic signature is the living or white stones of Carrara marble; in the pure form of the sculptures his attitude to life and work is reflected. He is the author of numerous abstract monumental public monuments dedicated to the National Liberation Struggle in Primorska.
The studio today houses a permanent display of sculptural works. The legacy is managed by the sculptor's wife, Nelida Nemec, and by the KUD Negovan Nemec, which also organises workshops for painters and musical and literary gatherings in the studio.
