About the museum
The Museo del Saxofono opened in Maccarese, in the municipality of Fiumicino, in September 2019 and is run by the Centro Studi Musicali “Torre in Pietra” APS, an association founded in 1989. It presents itself as the only museum in the world dedicated to the saxophone and holds over 600 musical instruments; it is accredited within the Lazio regional museum network.
The route, with organological, historical and virtual itineraries, brings together musical instruments, photographs and toys and tells the story and evolution of the saxophone through traditional and interactive displays. The association has provided period instruments and musical advice for four films, including “La leggenda del pianista sull’oceano” (The Legend of 1900) and “Gangs of New York”. The museum also hosts concerts, exhibitions, music courses and educational programmes for all ages.
