About the museum
The museum originated from an initial 19th-century nucleus, the collection assembled by Father Louis Antoine de Porrentruy. After several moves, since 1968 it has been housed in Rome, in the Pisana area along the Grande Raccordo Anulare, together with the Istituto storico dei Cappuccini, the General Archive and the Central Library of the Order.
The collections aim to document the history and art of the Franciscan Order, starting from the iconography of Saint Francis and then moving on to saints, blesseds and other figures of note. They include sculptures, drawings, engravings, prints, illuminated codices, ceramics, porcelain, medals and reproductions of seals.
The oldest work is a 13th-century panel with a gold background depicting Saint Francis with the Rule. Since 1965 the museum has been registered among the non-state museums as a minor, diocesan or religious museum.
