About the museum
Processing cork to make stoppers is a speciality of Cervarezza, whose origins are lost in time. The seasonal transhumance of local shepherds to the Maremma, where they wintered with their flocks, introduced them to the cork oak and to the possibility of working its bark. The bark thus reached Cervarezza, where all members of the families worked it by hand in houses and cellars to make the first rudimentary stoppers.
Later the work became industrialised, and it continues today thanks to some local operators who have preserved this tradition. The museum allows visitors to retrace the history of this unusual activity.
