About the museum

The Museo del Maggio in Villa Minozzo was created as a permanent documentation centre for a folk theatre tradition typical of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, the Maggio drammatico. It is housed in the premises of the old municipal building and aims to be not only a place of preservation but also an active centre serving the Maggio companies and scholars of folk traditions.

The rooms hold scripts, costumes and stage equipment, images of performances from the immediate post-war period to today, visual documents, original films to watch and audio recordings to listen to. The material is supplemented by graduation theses, works by enthusiasts and scholars, and a small library on the folk traditions linked to the Maggio.

One room is dedicated to “sister traditions”, where analogous forms of theatricality from Iran, Africa and the Iberian Peninsula can be seen. The Maggio drammatico stands out for its very ancient origin, its close ties to natural places and its transmission from one generation to the next, typical of a rural culture that is disappearing.
