About the museum
The Museo del Mare is a museum complex created by the municipality of San Benedetto del Tronto to tell the story of the town's relationship with the sea. It is housed in the former wholesale fish market on the north mole of the harbour and brings several sections together in one building: the Antiquarium Truentinum, the Museo delle Anfore, the Museo Ittico “Augusto Capriotti” and the Museo della Civiltà Marinara delle Marche. The complex also includes the Pinacoteca del Mare, in the Palazzo Piacentini, and the Villa Marittima, both in the Paese Alto, which have their own address.
The Antiquarium Truentinum holds finds from the ancient Castrum Truentinum and from the area between the Tesino and Tronto rivers, including Monteprandone, Acquaviva Picena and Ripatransone. The rooms trace the history from the Neolithic, with flint tools, pottery and the Guidi collection of Early Bronze Age bronze axes, through the Picene civilisation, with the grave goods of a rich tomb at Monteprandone, to the Roman period, with statue fragments, inscriptions, sarcophagi and the remains of a domus excavated in the Paese Alto.
The Museo della Civiltà Marinara delle Marche is organised into narrative units on voyages by sea, seafaring places shown on old maps, trades, ropes, nets and sails, and the art of boatbuilding, with documents, objects, oral sources and audiovisual testimonies. Since 2022 the museum has taken part in the UNICEF programme “Museo amico dei bambini e dei ragazzi”.
